The thread of memories begins in September 1940. At that time, I was an eight-year-old mischievous boy, enjoying my carefree last vacations in the azure sea of Platy Yialos and endless cycling trips through the cobbled streets of the town.
The marked years refer to the journey of memories of Gerasimos M. Metaxas from his childhood to his youth, focusing on events that took place in his birthplace, Kefalonia, from the pre-war period through the 1950s. The Italian occupation and the Italian-German conflict, the German occupation and the brotherly slaughter, the deadly earthquakes of 1953 are chronicled through the author's experiences, while at the same time, the thoughts and concerns of that era run through the narrative, along with events and testimonies of a much-troubled period, with the main goal of seeking historical truth.
A reflection on dark times when deprivation, insecurity, and passions endangered survival. A book about the inalienable right to democracy and freedom, based on the struggles, sacrifices, and selflessness of the heroic generation of 1940.
