Description

The image of Ermoupolis that we know from history books, photographs of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as from the buildings that have survived to this day, is significantly different from the image of the city as it was during the first decades of its existence, after the gradual formation during the Greek Revolution. Ermoupoli did not start to be built as a neoclassical city. The way and the historical conditions in which it developed, the initial impression of the first inhabitants that it was a temporary settlement until the war ended, the refugees’ destitution led to the formation of a settlement with wooden shacks and makeshift buildings, with chaotic construction and labyrinthine and foul-smelling alleys, which constituted the infant but necessary first image of Ermoupoli. The book "Images from the First Decades of Ermoupoli", on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of its naming, seeks to study and present this early image of the first decades after its creation and the process of transforming it into the brilliant city that became the jewel of the newly established Greek State. The primary tool for this study is the city's depiction made in 1835-37 by the Bavarian engineer Weber and the city plan of 1837, prepared by another Bavarian engineer, Weiler. For the needs of the book, the map has been redrawn and is presented as an insert along with a large and clear reproduction of the 1835-37 depiction, while a detailed study of each neighborhood of the city is also provided, presenting the state in 1835-37 and describing the changes that occurred according to the city plan. Within this study, the 1843 daguerreotype of Ermoupoli and the first photographs from 1852 are also presented and commented on, along with a photograph of part of Miaoulis Square, when it was still dirt. After thorough research in the existing archives of the era, detailed descriptions are given of the Municipality’s actions regarding the implementation of the city plan in the city center and the marketplace, the construction of the coastal pier, street paving, the opening and modifications of Ermoú Street, the long process for expropriating the lands of Othonos Square (today Miaoulis Square) and shaping it. Difficulties encountered during the implementation of the city plan, which led to deviations and irregularities, are also discussed. The book also includes the history of the port area, that is, the part of the sea that was filled in by refugees from 1823 to 1829, to build wooden shacks on it, which housed the city’s trade during its early years. It also narrates the interesting history of the long-standing dispute between the property owners of the port area and the Greek State, which designated the created land as National land and demanded compensation, a process that lasted about 32 years and was finalized in 1861. Through this study and research, it became possible to reconstruct the unrealized plan of the port area’s plots from 1853, gaining full knowledge and matching each owner’s name with its specific plot. From this matching, it is confirmed that all the mayors of the city up to 1853, along with a large number of municipal councilors and other citizens with significant influence in city administration, were owners of the port area. All data collected from the matching of owners and plots of the port area were compiled into a comprehensive map of Ermoupoli, supplemented with information obtained from the 1864 road and property census, the 1896 census, at least 180 plans, and numerous 19th-century documents. This map of Ermoupoli, printed on large sheets measuring 80×56 cm, is included as an insert in the back cover of the book. In this map, besides the names of property owners, the uses of buildings and different names that streets, squares, and various areas and neighborhoods of the city had during different periods are also indicated. The book also contains 52 plans and 35 tables with informational and statistical data, along with detailed indexes for searching for information, names, matching street names, neighborhoods, etc.
