This is a guide to the architecture of Athens over the past 200+ years. It complements the volume based on the album "Athens, Two Hundred Years - Two Hundred Buildings" curated by Manolis Anastassakis to celebrate 200 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821. The redevelopment of the city began in 1830, with the first urban plan approved in 1833 and revised in 1834.
From 1830–1834, Athens was essentially a new city with a new identity and urban design. This publication aims to highlight the architectural richness of the buildings in the capital of the modern Greek state. Therefore, the primary criterion guiding our selection was the unique architectural value of the building's facade, as well as its continued presence in the city today.
The presence of a building on these pages is also connected to secondary criteria. For example, an effort was made to distribute the buildings fairly among the studied periods. Additionally, we aimed to represent all significant architectural trends and influential personalities that marked these two centuries—those who had a strong presence in Athens.
Other secondary criteria for selection included the building's use (such as public buildings, halls, residences, churches, etc.), their location (within the Attica basin, with few exceptions), and the historic value of some buildings, which complemented their architectural features.
