This book covers the technique of cultivating 76 different vegetable species that are currently grown in small or large areas in Greece or could be cultivated in the future, as the climatic and soil conditions in our country are considered suitable for these crops.
The book details the techniques that should be followed when cultivating various outdoor vegetables, both annual and perennial, based on recent scientific information specific to each vegetable, as well as the author's extensive experience in research, practical cultivation, and teaching in the field of vegetable cultivation.
In the presentation of each vegetable, both its nutritional value and scientifically proven medicinal properties of many are discussed. The presentation, in addition to topics related to propagation, cultivation care, harvesting, storage, processing, pests and diseases, etc., is enriched with information regarding classification, origin, description of botanical characteristics, as well as statistical data tables concerning area and production at both international and national levels.
For Greece, statistical data is presented on the evolution of each crop over the last twenty years, imports and exports from the last 10 years, the average wholesale selling price per month at the Central Vegetable Market of Athens in recent years, as well as rich photographic material and many other interesting elements for each vegetable.
The primary goal of the book is to provide knowledge to students of Agricultural Universities and Technological Educational Institutes in our country, as well as to supply recent and documented information to agronomists in the public and private sectors, and to researchers engaged in vegetable crops. It will also be useful for progressive growers or even amateurs, who can find information and resolve questions that arise during their involvement with vegetable cultivation.
The author's belief is that there are significant prospects for Greek vegetables, not only for substituting imports but also for notable exports. However, organization of producers is required to reduce costs, produce high-quality products, and engage in modern marketing.
