The issue of banning students with dyslexia from entering Military Academies is the last officially sanctioned form of discrimination against a social group in the Greek state. This work seeks to shed light on an otherwise little-known issue.
The first part of the essay describes the term “Dyslexia” and explores its individual characteristics, not as a disorder—wrongly treated as such in the past—but as a distinctive way of thinking that differs from the social average. It then examines, from scientific, educational and legal perspectives, the need to repeal the laws that prohibit students with dyslexia from being admitted.
The second part presents a letter from the Hellenic Army General Staff, giving readers the opportunity to learn its official position on this issue. Finally, the third part sets out our response to these positions, along with examples of other countries, such as the USA, the UK and Israel, which routinely include people with dyslexia in their armed forces.
