Having fulfilled the dream of her life—to solve a murder case—Beatrice Steele feels that everything is finally falling into place. She has left behind the conservative community of Swampshire and moved to London, always accompanied by the reliable Miss Bolton.
They settled in a wonderful neighborhood, Sweetbriar, known for the Sweet Majestic Theater, its picturesque gardens, and a swarm of flying squirrels. There is also the "DS Investigations" office, which she opened together with the irritable, annoyingly logical Inspector Drake to solve the city's violent and exciting crimes.
But nothing goes as she hoped. Lord Huxley, a famous detective and Beatrice's former love, is still considered the real investigator of London, so the only cases left for Beatrice and Drake involve lost pets. Not that Beatrice has much time for solving crimes, as her mother still expects her to find a suitable, that is, a wealthy, husband.
Until a series of murders throws Beatrice and Drake into the vortex of a scandal that pits the wealthiest of the neighborhood against the artistic community, sowing chaos in the city. As they follow the clues through ballrooms, secret shops, and strange operas, Beatrice must survive the threats she faces—before it is too late.
