The sensor is the mechanism by which the mouse understands at what distance and with what speed we move it in order to translate our movement into cursor movement on the screen.

Laser sensors offer high sensitivity, high resolution, and can even be used on glossy surfaces. Most gamers use low resolution to achieve greater accuracy (especially in FPS games) and use mice on non-glossy surfaces such as gaming mousepads.
