This study is an elaboration of older material, incorporating new textual sources and an updated bibliography, focusing on the tradition of Sefer Yetzirah. This tradition perhaps represents the most esoteric aspect of ancient Jewish mysticism, as its complex and obscure texts seem to describe the ‘‘Body of God’’ as a numerological organism with cosmic dimensions.
It is precisely this enigmatic character of Sefer Yetzirah, along with its highly provocative themes concerning the religious concepts of ancient Judaism, that captivated the author and prompted an interpretive journey to explore the primary sources of this tradition and to map how elements of it are transformed within the lines of biblical texts (Old and New Testament), the literature of the Second Temple period (515 BC – 70 AD), Gnostic movements of late antiquity, and rabbinic thought.
This study aims to address a significant gap in international research, as ad hoc studies on Sefer Yetzirah are extremely limited in number, and likewise in Greece, where for the first time the ecstatic texts of this tradition are presented.
