Description

The majority of studies about the hieromartyr Chrysostom, Metropolitan of Smyrna, focus mainly on his period of active struggle in the Metropolises of Drama and Smyrna, overlooking his service at the Ecumenical Patriarchate, when he served there as the Great Protosyncellus.

The author's personal interest in the hieromartyr led him to investigate his writings in the “Church News of Constantinople,” as various volumes contain texts either authored by him or attributed to him, since he used to sign some of his articles with the initials “Ch.”

Subsequently, the idea that a comprehensive study of his literary activity during that period was missing prompted the goal of compiling his writings. Through this, we will get to know his thoughts, concerns, and activities both as a hieromonk and as a Metropolitan. It was ultimately deemed essential to include in this collection also his texts and letters from this period.

However, the main objective and ambition of this publication are to benefit researchers and historians seeking the writings of hieromartyr Chrysostom, which provided him the opportunity to participate and give opinions in significant theological discussions of the time, defend the inter-Christian dialogue, develop and thoroughly analyze hagiographical texts, deliver eulogistic eulogies or emotional speeches on Good Friday in the patriarchal church, and even participate in book reviews or publish frequent circulars particularly related to the ecclesiastical policies of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

His effort to direct attention toward the struggling and martyring Drama, through his letters to the Ecumenical Patriarch, was also made public to highlight the Bulgarian atrocities.
