Description

Cards of cemeteries are not a work of traditional art history nor literary theory. Nor are they a history of ideas in the strict sense, despite the richness of ideas they contain. However, by utilizing all these methods and approaches, it examines the spectacular explosion of images over the last two decades in order to explore, further, not just specific images but the role and position of these images in our daily lives.

With references to the works of Nadar, Roland Barthes, León Gollub, Nancy Spierer, Fazel Shaikh, Susan Maisselas, and others, it outlines different strategies of reading that, starting from the belief that the past, present, and future are always interconnected, form a manual for understanding visual material in the 21st century.

The six essays in the book have been written with the conviction that in the face of the speed at which images are produced, distributed, and stored today—and despite their transient and fleeting nature—there are ways of reading that patiently reconstruct the genealogy and networks of relationships that govern the multiple worlds of images. Collectively, the essays examine the changing regime of images not only today and in the future but also in the past. They deal with images, considering them as questions rather than as something self-evident.
