Description

The spectacular legacy of the popular artist. A refreshingly colorful gift book for fans of her unique art by Niki de Saint Phalle.

The Herrenhäuser Gardens in Hanover are among the most beautiful parks in Germany. The Grosser Garten, established in 1666, is one of the most important Baroque gardens in Europe. The northwestern part of this treasure features the grotto, built in 1676. The three spaces, originally decorated with shells, crystals, glass, and minerals, served as a place of magic and a cool retreat on hot days. The decorations were already removed in the 18th century, and later the building was used as a permanent storage space.

After restoration for Expo 2000, the interior of the grotto was redesigned according to the plans of Niki de Saint Phalle, a project that was to be the last in an extraordinary creation, as the artist passed away in the spring of 2002.

The octagonal central space and those on the left and right were splendidly decorated with mosaics made of colorful glass and mirrors, with pebbles and many painted sculptural figures made of fiberglass. The spiral arrangement of ornaments around the column at the entrance symbolizes spirituality, with the west-facing mirror representing day and life and the east blue space representing night and the universe.
