Knee Deep in Hexes is a two-player strategy board game that combines elements from popular RTS games of the 90s. After leaving Earth, players battle on a remote desert planet for rare resources, building extractors, factories, and units, ranging from fast vehicle constructions to menacing Paloozas.
Each player chooses a phase, which includes four companions: the General, who oversees the battle from the planet's orbit; the Commander, with numerous battle experiences and rapid tactical adjustments; the Technician, who supports the forces with constant innovations; and the Rogue, who deceives the enemy. Each companion comes with a unique set of action and war cards.
Players can use pre-existing lists or, if more experienced, gain new strategies through the synthesis process. The same goes for the map: players can either use a pre-set version for a quick match or create a world before the game starts by selecting planetary cards.
In this action-packed game, time is limited to secure your essential supplies, meaning you need to build your first construction vehicles and extractors before clashing with your opponent on a restricted map. Play action cards during your turn to gain strategic advantages and take the initiative on the battlefield.
Strategically gather your forces, carefully plan the use of war cards that will give you powerful bonuses in battle, and declare the war zone you wish to attack. However, players must be cautious, as the battle in the announced zone will not take place immediately at the end of your turn, but at the end of your opponent's turn. Enemies have their entire turn to react, readjust their forces, or counterattack elsewhere. Therefore, it is necessary to be absolutely sure before taking action.
