The action of the novel unfolds in Rouletenburg, a fictional city in Germany. A retired Russian general visits the city with his children and his girlfriend, a much younger woman whom he is preparing to marry. Accompanying them is the young teacher Alexei Ivanovich, who is in love with Polina, the general's eldest daughter.
On the brink of bankruptcy, the general is waiting to inherit from his aunt. At the same time, Alexei, captivated by his tyrannical and unfulfilled love for Polina, begins to gamble at the city's casino, offering all his winnings to his beloved. However, this will only mark the beginning of his gradual downfall.
