Description

The book by ambassador and historian Dimitris Papandreou covers a historical period of approximately 16 centuries and recounts critical and representative moments of the long journey, as well as the simultaneous adaptation of Hellenism to the challenges and dilemmas posed by history. The "Historical Discourse on the New Hellenism," moving within the spirit of the continuous historical continuity of Hellenism, seeks to provide answers and illuminate moments that have not yet been satisfactorily addressed and that require a different approach. Contributing to this is the distance from the events, which allows for more sober evaluations away from the distortive lens of heroic narratives of events and the repeated glorification of the same figures and situations.

This study does not focus so much on already known facts but analyzes the narrated events, assuming that the knowledgeable reader is already familiar with them and is seeking a more substantive and, most importantly, unconventional deepening into the subjects. The narration can be intense at certain points; however, the addition of operational findings and conclusions at the end of selected chapters helps the reader to navigate flexibly through the intermediate connecting sections and chapters. The book is a continuous effort to offer a different interpretation of historical moments that remain unanswered even today, as the demands of the "commercial" use of history have relegated them, at least temporarily, to the margins of historical research. The choice of chapter titles also aims to awaken the reader's reflection, who is accustomed to reading more "refined" and "balanced" nominal approaches in the spirit of an outdated decorum that hesitates to confront the real needs of the audience of history.

The author's work analyzes, criticizes, and evaluates the historical passages of Hellenism's journey through the lens of a philosophical approach to history, which utilizes the findings of general history to draw conclusions of its own without distorting their core content.
