It is a story of chance: Genoese sailors who narrate; a curious Milanese monk who listens to the spermology, believes it, and decides to transfer it into a notebook that will never be completed; a copyist who, fifty years later, for reasons we do not know, becomes interested in that notebook and transcribes it; a unique manuscript that survives in a remarkable way through the ages, emerging after a dangerous sequence of concealments, thefts, sales, and relocations.
