The newspaper "The Herald of the Church" was established in 1913 and has been published since then as a newspaper of the Greek Diaspora in Australia in a bilingual edition. Since 2001, it has been published (as a bilingual, with the English text located on the last pages covering one-third of the body). From the first issue of this new edition of the newspaper, which became monthly, the late Archbishop of Australia, Kyros Stylianos (Charkianakis), published in each issue the main article (always on page 3) with the headline PAREMBASI, accompanied by the parallel title “The Heavier Things of the Law”.
From this column, His Grace comments in each issue of our newspaper on one of the major issues of common concern, which Christ called “heavier than the law,” criticizing the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. The formulation refers to Chapter 23 of the Gospel of Matthew, known as “Woes against the scribes and Pharisees.” Judgment, mercy, and faith were the ongoing concerns of the Archbishop, not only in the editorial content of the newspaper but also in his overall pastoral care for the Church he was called to shepherd.
This is reflected in the content and remarks of this book, which contain comments on topics: a) ecclesiastical and theological, highlighting a great theologian of his time, b) moral, included in his concern as a shepherd for the proper pilgrimage of his flock in Christ-like life, c) Greek community-related, especially in his efforts to free the Orthodox Church’s flock in Australia from divisions and schisms, d) political, particularly concerning the homeland of the Greeks in Australia, e) social, involving sharp criticism of social injustice by all kinds of “merchants” of people's lives, following the example of Christ, who drove them out of the temple with a whip, f) topical, referring to current events (celebrations, actions, people's initiatives), with positive or negative comments. The book contains 185 articles.
