The work of Saint Gregory of Nyssa, "On the Making of Man," constitutes one of the most brilliant milestones of Christian thought, as it attempts to answer the age-old question: "What is man?"
According to Gregory, man is not a random being, but the "boundary," that is, the border between the material and the spiritual world. God, like a provident host, first created the entire universe as a magnificent palace, and only when everything was ready, introduced man into it. Man does not enter creation as a slave, but as a king and ruler, endowed with the "divine image."
The "created in the image of God" is the foundation of human dignity. For Gregory, this image is not found in the body, but in the quality of the soul. Its dominant characteristic is free will, the absolute freedom of choice. Man is the only being who can choose his path, to love and to create, thus reflecting the attributes of his Creator.
At the same time, Gregory approaches the anatomy of the body with admiration. He does not consider it a prison of the soul, but a perfect tool. He describes the mind as a musician and the body as a lyre; just as music is not confined to a single string but spreads throughout the instrument, so the mind enlivens every cell of human existence.
Finally, the text concludes with a note of hope regarding decay and death. Gregory explains that our current state, full of weaknesses and needs, is temporary. Man is destined for the Resurrection, a condition where the body will be transformed, losing the burden of decay and regaining its original, "radiant" light, returning to full communion with the divine.
