To pay off his property, Mr. Shelby is forced to sell his black slaves to the slave trader Haley: Eliza with her young son Harry and the estate's overseer, Uncle Tom. Eliza escapes with her child and they take refuge in another state. However, Uncle Tom refuses to flee. Thus uprooted heartlessly from his family, he is led to the slave market. On the steamboat that carries him, he saves the life of little Eva and her father, a wealthy landowner and good man, buys him. Uncle Tom spends a few humane years before tragic trials find him.
