Description

The story of the dissolution of a family, the inhumane treatment of a people, the disintegration of a country, and a peninsula with empty houses.

The story of a soldier who tears his skin to let out the accumulated ash, a poet who sews the shadow of a girl after a bombing, and a teacher who teaches his students how to play dead. Of a general who sleeps next to the severed hand of a saint, a blind child who regains his sight during a blackout, and a peasant woman who paints all the trees in her garden black. Of a foreign photographer who steps on a mine near Brunete and does not lift his foot for forty years, a resident of Guernica who drives a van with the smoked wreckage of an air raid to the center of Paris, and a wounded dog whose blood will stain the last stripe of an abandoned flag of Badajoz.

Here, then, is the story of the Spanish Civil War and a dying Iberian Peninsula, where the imaginary reflects the harshness of reality; where the destinies of an entire generation of olive producers from Handula intersect with those of Alberti, Lorca, and Unamuno; Rodoreda, Thabran, and Kent; Hemingway, Orwell, and Bernanos; Picasso and Ortega y Gasset; Athania and Franco; where the epic and the ethnographic intertwine and create a magnificent tapestry, poetic and grotesque, beautiful and delirious.

THE GUY WROTE

The boldest and most brilliant novel of the year is this monumental work by David Ucles, a story about the Spanish Civil War with a surreal touch, and a Cervantes-style narrator who immediately captivates the reader. El Pais

David Ucles manages to narrate with humor, intelligence, and large doses of imagination. An otherworldly magical realism full of lyricism envelops the entire novel. El Mundo

David Ucles has brilliantly revived magical realism – a genre rarely chosen for addressing historical themes – sparking a discussion around writing, ideology, and history. La Vanguardia

In this mosaic of stories, the author chooses to follow in the footsteps of magical realism veterans such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende. Ucles' originality offers literature a new, pulsating rhythm. Rockdelux

Ucles reconstructs violence, crimes, and war disputes, but also dreams and ideals, in a style of magical realism that approaches the work of Gunter Grass in The Tin Drum. Ara

No contemporary novel has moved me as deeply as The Peninsula of Empty Houses. Ian Gibson
