Description

The fifth and final issue of the titular series is like two issues in one. It consists of 96 pages with rich additional content.

The two most capable generals of their generation — Bardas Phokas and Bardas Skleros — join forces with one goal: to capture Constantinople and depose the young emperor.

Basil II finds himself alone. Without a reliable army, he relies solely on the imperial fleet and the insurmountable Theodosian Walls to hold on to power. And while the capital is under immediate threat, the empire is collapsing around him.

In the West, after the humiliating defeat at the Gates of Trajan, Samuel has swept across the Balkans, leaving only Thessaloniki and southern Greece free. In the East, the Fatimids are preparing to conquer Syria. Surrounded by enemies.

Betrayed by his own generals. Without an army. Without allies. How can an emperor save an empire... when he has nothing?

Note from the back cover:

"Emperor Basil II (976-1025) is perhaps the most prominent representative of the great Macedonian dynasty, which held the reins of power in the Byzantine Empire for almost two centuries (867-1057). Instead of staying in the palaces, he preferred the fields of battle, where he excelled, achieving crucial victories. During his reign, the authority of Byzantium extended from southern Italy to the Euphrates, while the Christianization of the Rus of Kiev in 988 gave new dimensions to the radiance of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, highlighting the abilities of Byzantine ecclesiastical diplomacy.”
