What’s new about P.A.U.L. D.?

The proven concept of P.A.U.L. D. has been continued and optimized. This is particularly evident in new materials, especially visual materials and new text selections, while retaining what has proven effective. Task formats gradually build basic knowledge from simple to more complex levels, catering to different learning types in a differentiated manner. Further internal differentiation is taken into account with tasks that consider individual learning pace, motivations, and abilities of the students. A new task format, "Take Off! How You Can Continue Working," has been introduced and is integrated into the learning processes. Additionally, differentiation and practice materials are included in the extensive final chapter "Practice, Review and More..." (from grade 6). Review pages at the end of all units are included where didactically appropriate, featuring "Small Exercises for Learning Control" (self-evaluation including solutions) related to previously acquired knowledge. The book also presents a new format and layout.

What remains?

Like the previous edition, the revised P.A.U.L. D. continues to be a reading and workbook for German classes at grammar schools (and comprehensive schools). P.A.U.L. D. follows the principle of competence orientation, reflected in various areas such as learning to learn, methods of learning, retaining, and recalling factual texts, writing term papers, preparing presentations, drawing structural outlines, interdisciplinary learning, initiating and promoting individual learning processes, and text handling.

Orientation towards text types and thematic focuses:

Preparation of texts through guiding questions that reflect the classroom learning process facilitates preparation while balancing analytical and production-oriented tasks. Method-guided handling of factual texts promotes reading techniques and media. The book also emphasizes working with electronic media and the internet, media criticism, film analysis, and media production.

Speaking:

The book includes oral storytelling, speech training, a theater-oriented unit in every volume, and the presentation of poems.

Writing:

Systematic planning and writing of traditional essay forms, revising techniques, and creative writing are emphasized.

And correct writing:

An extensive methods unit for learning spelling systematically develops selected spelling issues and provides comprehensive material for individual practice.

Reflection on language:

A very systematic exploration of significant grammatical phenomena is provided, linking language instruction with other task areas of the German subject, accompanied by a high proportion of exercises.

Each unit begins with an introductory text providing an outlook on the main learning focuses and showing ways to present what has been learned. Some units contain concrete suggestions for project-oriented work, and larger units are subdivided to allow easy selection of subchapters. Almost all units end with a suggestion for independent practice.
