Description

Tegernsee, summer of 1918. Thomas Mann and his family are spending their holidays by the lake. The children are swimming and catching redfish, Thomas Mann is rowing, taking walks, and climbing a mountain for the first time. His wife is caring for the newborn baby, while Bausan, the dog, is lounging in the shade, as the writer transforms him into a literary hero. Everything seems idyllic, but Thomas Mann is troubled by worries.

The defeat of Germany in World War I is imminent, and it is now clear that the author, with his Reflections of an Unpolitical – which also led to a conflict with his brother – is on the wrong side. At the end of summer, with the old world collapsing around him, Mann will have learned a lot about dogs and rowing, discovered the ecstasy of paternal love, and will be on the path that will lead him to his masterpiece, The Magic Mountain.

The Power of a Summer Encounter

Kerstin Holzer writes with warmth and humor about a very special summer in the life of the Nobel laureate author, exploring his fears and desires. A lighthearted story about the courage to change and the power of love.

What the Press Wrote

A highly entertaining and insightful look into the personal life of the great writer. Freundin

Kerstin Holzer has managed to create a psychological portrait of the most famous German author. She writes about the summer of 1918 in a way that is both entertaining and historically interesting. BR Evening Show

An exquisite psychographic portrait, depicting Thomas Mann as a reflective, remarkably human artist, full of contradictions. I read this masterpiece of inner transformation with admiration and genuine emotion. Frido Mann

Kerstin Holzer's small book about the artist overcoming a crisis while struggling with himself is certainly an excellent read. Abendzeitung

Kerstin Holzer writes as if she observed everything with love and humor from the next table. A light, beautiful summer book. Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger
