Description

The edition Dimitris Sevastakis: The Word and the Place was created on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition organized by the National Library of Greece (November 27, 2025 - February 28, 2026). The exhibition of Dimitris Sevastakis, titled The Word and the Place, includes more than two hundred of his works, created over the last decade and exhibited for the first time at the National Library of Greece.

The exhibition consists of two major sections. The first section, "The Word," forms a triptych: imaginary literary heroes, authors, readers. The authors are Greek and foreign, living and deceased, many of whom are family and personal friends of the painter. Regarding the literary heroes, Sevastakis' project is particularly interesting: instead of portraying famous or unknown literary heroes, he chose to paint imaginary, potential literary heroes, who may or may not arouse the interest of some writer. The third group consists of the readers, where the painter's self-portrait dominates overwhelmingly, but also include his wife, daughter, father, mother, and a few friends.

The second section of the exhibition, "The Place," includes landscapes from his native Samos or from Hymettus, near the painter's studio, landscapes that are elliptical and suggestive (with pastel for the smaller ones and oil for the larger), but all are bright and cheerful. Essential motifs of Sevastakis could not be missing from the exhibition, those that persist in his work and illuminate it with a strange light: wolves swimming or emerging from the sea, while the moon dominates the night sky. Secret landscapes of threat, fear, and vigilance.
