June 1940. The Germans enter Paris. Darkness and a nighttime curfew are imposed everywhere except at the luxurious Ritz Hotel. Eager to discover the elegance of French way of life, the occupiers socialize there with the Parisian elite. Behind the bar works Frank Meyer, the world's greatest bartender. Adaptation is a matter of survival, and Frank, who proves to be a skilled diplomat, gains the sympathy of German officers, thus ensuring his own peace, as well as that of Lysiano, his apprentice, and the enigmatic and daring Blanche Ozeló. For four years, the Gestapo men socialize at the bar with personalities such as Coco Chanel and Sacha Guitry. These men and women, collaborators with the Germans or resistors, heroes or warmongers, will love, betray each other, and perhaps fight for some idea. Most of them, however, are unaware that Frank Meyer, an Austrian refugee, a veteran of 1914, and orchestrator of this strange ballet, hides a heavy secret: his Jewish origins.
Philippe Collen skillfully and meticulously reconstructs a turbulent era. Through the fate of this misunderstood man, he becomes the eye and ear of occupied France, narrating the eternal conflict between fear and courage.
"Masterful... a sweeping waltz of History with fiction in a mythic Paris hotel." - Le Journal du Dimanche
"A truly captivating novel with writing distinguished by elegance and moral depth. Collen reveals how humanity survives dark times: not through heroic deeds, but through the quiet, daily effort to remain true to ourselves. In a world distorted by power and fear, the Ritz bartender reminds us that our humanity is not something innate but a virtue we continuously cultivate through our relationships with others." - Chris Cleave, author of The Keepers
"Blending deep knowledge of the Occupation period and a profound understanding of his characters' psychology, Collen creates a intoxicating narrative cocktail." - L’Express
"A masterful novel about France under German occupation." - Le Parisien
"With his undeniable storytelling talent, Philippe Collen transports us into the daily life of a bar that resembles a theater of masks." - Le Figaro
