Description

The book Daily Life in Medieval Serbia offers a synthesis of existing knowledge and also contains the results of new research on the subject. Combining these two elements, it constitutes a representative sample of academic research on the Serbian Middle Ages by Serbian scholars. The work of three distinguished researchers, archaeologist Marko Popović, medievalist Smilja Marjanović-Dušanić, and art historian Danica Popović, provides an in-depth look at the customs and traditions, as well as the beliefs of medieval Serbs.

Through this book, the authors, using tools from political, social, and cultural history, construct a convincing portrait of medieval Serbia, especially its largely unknown aspects. The authors focus on the relationship between the private and public spheres of Serbian medieval society. Using numerous primary and secondary sources, they bridge the gap between the modern world and the distant, yet unique, world of medieval Serbia. This work demonstrates that for the Serbs of the Middle Ages, Byzantium was a beacon of culture, a constant point of reference. Therefore, without doubt, for Greek readers, this work is an opportunity to learn about the medieval history of a Balkan people very familiar to them, and in extension to open another window to study an important part of their own identity, namely the medieval Hellenism, which was nurtured and flourished within Byzantium.
