Description

The Vought A-7 Corsair II is a lightweight attack aircraft designed to operate from aircraft carriers. Its history began in February 1964, when Vought (now LTV Aerospace) was tasked with developing a new carrier-based aircraft for the U.S. Navy, intended to replace the A-4 Skyhawk, with greater payload capacity and range.

The project was developed based on the F-8 Crusader, adapting it for subsonic flights. The first flight of the prototype A-7 took place in 1965, and mass production started a year later. The Corsair II resembles the silhouette of the Crusader, but the wing's sweep angle was unchanged, which was redesigned to increase the number of attachment points to 6. In addition to wings and fuselage, tools such as saws and wing flaps, a device for hydraulic folding of the wings was also used.

The structure was largely unified with the Crusader, utilizing many existing components. The main versions include: A-7E.
