Description

The LTV A-7 Corsair II is a subsonic light attack aircraft based on an aircraft carrier, designed to replace the A-4 Skyhawk of the United States Navy, which was put into service during the Vietnam War.

The Corsair was adopted by the United States Air Force, as well as by the National Guard, to replace the A-1 Skyraider, F-100 Super Sabre, and F-105 Thunderchief.

The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s and to other countries such as Portugal and Thailand, in the late 1980s.

The design of the A-7 fuselage is based on the successful supersonic F-8 Crusader manufactured by Chance Vought.

Some of the features of the A-7 include:

  • Heads-up display in the windshield.
  • Inertial navigation system (INS).
  • Turbofan engine.
  • USA-specific A-7D version with Allison TF41-A-1 turbofan.
  • 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun.

A total of 459 units were built.
