The Corsair was adopted by the United States Air Force, as well as by the National Guard, to replace the A-1 Skyraider, F-100 Super Sabre, and F-105 Thunderchief.
The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s and to other countries such as Portugal and Thailand, in the late 1980s.
The design of the A-7 fuselage is based on the successful supersonic F-8 Crusader manufactured by Chance Vought.

- Turbofan engine.
- USA-specific A-7D version with Allison TF41-A-1 turbofan.
- 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun.
