The Athenians called the women from Asia Minor "pastrikes." They considered them somewhat less than prostitutes and thought they were filthy because they bathed often, while with their education, beauty, multilingualism, opinions, coquettishness, charm, cleanliness, and cheerful and lively character, they conquered the men in the capital. "They are stealing our men!" the local Athenian women would shout.

When the young refugee girl Roi from Aydın in Asia Minor meets the forty-year-old Marika from Smyrna for the first time, she cannot imagine that an unshakable friendship will be born between them, one of those that marks an entire life. Roi, with her fiery hair and melodious voice, will gradually conquer the stage and find love in the face of the handsome and manly Agis. A frivolity of his with severe consequences will separate them, and Roi will take the fateful decision to leave for New York, where her father's brother lives, determined never to return. But when Marika’s husband, the wonderful Matthaios, is in danger, she will return to her homeland to support her. And on her path, Agis will appear again…

A novel about the wounds of exile, the prejudices of a changing society, but also the power of love and above all the indestructible value of friendship.
