The study explores the cognitive capacities of an old distinction in the social sciences, that between Tradition and Modernity. It examines the directions taken by the modernization of societies at the economic, political, and intellectual levels. It highlights the trend that characterizes all modernization changes: individualization. And it attempts to understand the ambivalent and contradictory attitudes of contemporary individuals toward their own society and those that preceded it.
