The basic setting of this true story is the landscape of rural Sicily: the stones, the rugged scrub-covered and rocky places, the pastures; the magic of botany with the pistachio trees, which are female and male trees, the promises of the elder tree, in whose leaves the golden-green beetles hide, for magical nights, the seasonal songs. We first encounter, after 1850, the patriarch Luigi Sacco, an intelligent, tireless worker who lovingly tended the land. Then come the descendants, all hard-working young men, and socialists, with transatlantic migration and enlistment during the Great War. The embezzlements and villainies of the vile Mafia leaders, concealed behind political “puppets” in the tragic darkness of fascism. The five Sacco brothers know how desperately hard it is to live under the regime imposed by the Mafia. They are forced to leave, to hide. They feel they are taking on the role of savior, in the (armed) struggle against their Mafia persecutors. They become solitary judges, in the dark silence of omertà: citizens outlawed by a state that could not guarantee their safety, could not protect them.
