Macadamia is a type of tree from the Proteaceae family. It includes 9 species and is naturally found in Australia, New Caledonia, and Sulawesi. It is currently also cultivated in Hawaii and South Africa. Macadamia was discovered in Australia in 1857 by botanist Walter Hill, who named it Macadamia in honor of his friend John McAdam.
Macadamia nuts are mainly consumed as a tasty snack in various forms: lightly salted, roasted, toasted, or raw. They are also used as an ingredient in cookies, cakes, spreads, and creams, as well as an addition to cereals and muesli.
