Alexandrian senna leaves are dried cassia leaves, also known as Egyptian leaves. To prepare the infusion, add 1 tablespoon of crushed leaves or a pinch of whole leaves to 1 glass of boiling water, cover and leave to steep for 1–2 hours, then strain before use. They are described as having a laxative effect and are associated with relief from occasional constipation.
Excessive consumption may cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea or electrolyte imbalances. Use is not recommended in cases of intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or pregnancy. Long-term use may cause bowel dependence. Store in a cool, dark place.
