Description

The book is a root of the Csángó Székely people from Csángó and tells the remarkable story of three generations of a Székely family from Csángó in the last decades of the 19th century, based on original documents preserved in the family archive: maps, certificates, invoices, official documents, private letters, and official decisions. The administrative documents from this period provide solid evidence of the life of a Sebben family of merchants and educators spanning almost a century. In addition to about one and a half hundred signed memoranda included in the volume, readers can also learn about the historical, political, and cultural background of the period recorded by these documents. Some chapters also contain parts of the family heritage, which often transcends the individual fate and personal conflicts of the Sebben, reflecting the collective historical traumas of the inhabitants of Székely Land, particularly the Csángó Plain. “Family archives are true treasures and joys, consisting of small, personal notes, sometimes only a few lines that say everything that a hundred official documents alone could never imply. Therefore, let me offer a piece of advice: let us protect our heritage from the destruction of documents, boilers, and trash bins. Let us think of future generations so that they can know the holidays and everyday lives of their ancestors, not only through fragments and pixels or screen searches but through real encounters with these archives.”
