The cicada, an insect belonging to the family Tettigidae (Cicadidae), took its name from the ancient Greek word "tettix." It primarily appears during the summer months and lives in trees, where the characteristic chirping of some of them signifies their presence. For many, this sound is synonymous with summer.
The epic story of Prince Thithonus is closely linked to the creation of the first cicada. Thithonus was born on the hottest day the planet has ever known, bringing with him the unique gift of music, a talent no other mortal possessed until then. Eos, the immortal daughter of Titans, deeply in love with Thithonus and enchanted by his music, begged the Olympian gods to grant him immortality. Her request was granted, but the gods forgot to bestow eternal youth upon him. Thithonus, now aged and frail, loses his place among the living.
Recognizing his plight, the gods decide to transform him into a new creature. Thus, Tettix, the first cicada, is born along with its distinctive chirping. Discover the story of Thithonus and Eos, a touching tale of love and transformation that created one of nature's most recognizable sounds and embedded music into humanity's life.
