A historical study of Sitia, Lassithi during the period 1870–1970. The aim of the book is to examine the development of the city through two main axes: the economy and society, highlighting the changes that shaped its urban character and influenced the wider region.
The study does not attempt to reconstruct the history of the entire Sitia province, but focuses on the city itself and its immediate area. It is based on rich archival material and evidence and follows a holistic approach, examining both the functioning of the city and the life of its inhabitants.
The periodization is not based on local events, but according to the general developments of national history, which are linked to economic and social changes. At the same time, issues such as local government, demographic and residential development, urban transformation, infrastructure projects, trade, cultural life, health, and tourism are analyzed.
Finally, it is emphasized that these transformations give Sitia a unique identity, as its course does not always strictly follow the general political developments of the country, but presents its own distinct characteristics.
