Description

The second monograph of one of the world’s leading architects – a continuation of Kengo Kuma Complete Works, first published in 2012 and updated in 2018. Kengo Kuma is one of Japan’s top architects and an Honorary Professor at the University of Tokyo. Known as a prolific writer and philosopher, he proposes an architecture that opens new relationships between nature, technology, and people. In this book, Kuma’s second monograph, forty works are classified according to their use, with emphasis on those responding to natural disasters and the pandemic, focusing on the importance of local communities and our need to connect with others. The works range in scale and ambition, from Japan’s Olympic Stadium – where Kuma used wood from every region of the country to build the nation’s largest arena – to a small community center in Yusuhara and a fairy-tale museum in Denmark. Each work celebrates Kuma’s skill in using natural materials as he pushes their boundaries to create exciting and stunning forms. An important introduction by Grace La examines Kuma’s progress since the last book, as well as the themes of his work and how they relate to today’s architectural world. The included projects – stadiums and cultural centers, museums and houses, cafés and parks, temples and pavilions – have been selected by Kuma himself as the best representatives of this stage of his career. None appear in the previous book.
