The grit of a nail file determines the degree of abrasion of the emery. The smaller the number, the harder and therefore more abrasive the file is. Conversely, the larger the number, the softer the file is. For artificial nails, files with harder grit are recommended, while for natural nails, softer ones are preferred.

• 80-100: very hard grit
• 120-150: hard grit
• 180-240: medium grit
• 400: soft grit
• 600: very soft grit
