The grit of the nail file determines the degree of abrasion of the emery. The lower the number, the harder and more abrasive the file is. Conversely, the higher the number, the softer and less abrasive the file is. For artificial nails, files with coarser grit are recommended. For natural nails, softer files are preferred.
