The first of five collections of stories about the adventures of detective Sherlock Holmes, published after two novels: A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four. Like in the mentioned titles, Holmes solves unusual and complex criminal cases, primarily using the method of deduction. In deciphering problems, the detective is also aided by his knowledge of psychology, chemistry, law, detective fiction, police accident reports, and his ever-present pipe, sometimes accompanied by playing the violin. Additionally, thanks to his exceptional physical fitness, he manages to escape the most difficult predicaments unscathed. He is accompanied in his endeavors by Dr. Watson, a friend and chronicler of all significant achievements.
