Description

In Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky presents the lives of three brothers – who have nothing in common with each other – and their relationship with their father, the greedy and reckless Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov. Copeau and Croué, the adapters of Brothers Karamazov, managed to condense the lengthy and complex novel with remarkable clarity and skill, capturing its episodic nature without weakening or altering it in any way. They succeeded in preserving two essential elements: the psychology of the characters and the dramatic intensity of their passions. I admired with all my heart the stage adaptation of Brothers Karamazov, without guilt or regret for the sacrifices the adapters had to make to condense the vast and rich work of the Russian novelist into five acts. Nevertheless, as they presented it, the drama is powerful and its structure highly skillful—not only in its very simple plot but also in the unfolding and shaping of the characters who hold the most interest. Indeed, when we examine the plot of Brothers Karamazov, we see that it is rather melodramatic. A family story is presented, a legal story, that contains nothing particularly new. But the usual elements of this story are overshadowed by the astonishing scenes Dostoevsky paints for us of the Karamazov family. In these, the great Russian psychologist appears unmatched. Also, in these scenes, Copeau and Croué revealed their most conscientious craftsmanship and revive the characters of the novel with perfect precision.
