Archaeology could offer a richer insight into the human sensory experience, surpassing the hitherto limited and fundamentally problematic treatment of bodily sensations. Yiannis Hamilakis proposes a sensory archaeology that can discover the lost, suffocated, and forgotten sensory and co-motor tropes of humans. Using Bronze Age Crete as a case study, he shows how sensory memory can help us reconsider problems ranging from the production of ancestral heritage to large-scale social change and the cultural significance of monuments.
