This is a variety of a perennial, semi-evergreen herbaceous species originating from southwestern North America, where it grows on rocky, sloping surfaces of the mountain and alpine zones. Known in trade as coral bells.
It develops a compact, very dense, rich, freely mounding growth, reaching a height of 20 to 30 cm and a width of 25 to 30 cm.
The lush foliage consists of numerous large, round to heart-shaped lobed leaves with bright green color, long petioles, and slightly toothed edges. The fragrant bell-shaped flowers appear from May to June, often until September, have a diameter of up to 1 cm, a deep pink to red color, and are arranged in linear, airy raceme-like inflorescences borne on thin dark stems measuring 40 to 50 cm in length.
