Lesvos is located in the northeastern Aegean and is the third largest Greek island after Crete and Euboea. Its capital is Mytilene, a name often used for the entire island. Lesvos was the birthplace of Alcaeus and Sappho, leading representatives of ancient lyric poetry, and Pittacus, one of the seven sages of antiquity, while in modern times the island has produced the painter Theophilos and the Nobel laureate poet Odysseas Elytis.

In ancient times, Lesvos experienced great development, with its most important cities being Mytilene, Mithymna, and Eresos. The island passed from the Byzantines to the Genoese and, in 1461, to the Ottomans. Lesvos was liberated by the Greek fleet during the Balkan Wars in 1912 and united with Greece in 1914.

Endowed with a diverse natural landscape, wetlands, thermal springs, significant monuments and pilgrimage sites, rich and varied architectural heritage, as well as unique attractions such as the famous petrified forest, Lesvos enchants visitors.
