The water level gauge is a simple measuring instrument used for height alignment of two distant points when the distance does not allow the use of a traditional level.

It consists of a flexible, transparent plastic tube of large length, which is filled with water. For height alignment, one end of the tube is placed vertically so that the water level is exactly at the first point. The other end is placed at the point to be aligned. The water level at the second end will be at the same height as that at the first end. Conditions for the proper operation of the device are:

• The water is at the same temperature throughout the length of the tube.
• The tube does not contain air bubbles.
• There are no obstructions along the tube.

The use of the water level gauge is based on the principle of communicating vessels, so the water level at the two ends of the tube always remains on the same horizontal line, regardless of the length of the tube.
