This book examines the so-called “traffic problem” in our large urban areas head-on and analyzes what went wrong and why. It discusses ten specific reasons for our failure to control the situation and achieve the standards that are now commonplace in other countries. These reasons are supported by a brief yet comprehensive review of the last 50 years of “events,” characterized by numerous promises, significant delays, and flawed implementation processes, often involving piecemeal and firefighting measures that are not integrated into systematic planning, along with weak or non-existent control and enforcement procedures.
The necessary new approach should be based on providing sustainable mobility for every traveler instead of increasing infrastructure capacity for vehicle movement. The “key” is the holistic view of the necessary projects based on long-term planning, reorganization of the governing system in Athens and Thessaloniki, and political will for the implementation of radical measures and policies for sustainable mobility without hesitation or exceptions. Critical decisions must be made today (yesterday!) and start to be planned and implemented immediately so that a new governance system for the sector and action measures can be operational as soon as possible.
Eventually, restrictions on the use of private cars will soon be on the table. These (technological and other) ways of limiting car use should be thoroughly studied now, with every detailed analysis in parallel with the formulation and implementation of sustainable mobility policies. A sustainable solution will be a difficult and painful process that will inevitably entail economic, social, and political costs. If the leading figures capable of making tough decisions are found and if our society is informed and reacts positively to the necessary changes, then – and only then – can we hope for a better future for our urban transportation and traffic.
