The book contains a series of articles and public interventions made over the past years, which aimed both at critiquing the economic policies implemented and at proposing alternative suggestions in areas such as investments, energy, education, national defense, and the country's European strategy.
Without ignoring some positive developments of previous governments – such as the multi-year debt relief by the SYRIZA-ANEL government or the recovery of the economy and markets by New Democracy after 2019 – the book demonstrates that on one hand, the productive and human resources have not been restored to pre-crisis levels, and on the other hand, the gap between Greece and other European countries remains significant.
Furthermore, even the resurgence of growth is mostly due to the funds from the Recovery Fund, which is soon coming to an end without leaving behind a framework of investments, infrastructure, and reforms that could serve as a driving force for national reconstruction. The lack of these has led to a surge in inflation, increasing the cost of goods and services, reducing household purchasing power, and exacerbating inequalities for the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Of course, investments have occurred, but the most significant part was directed not into productive assets but primarily into Real Estate, through so-called funds and the scandalous Golden Visa scheme. The result is entire areas in urban centers and in nationally sensitive regions being purchased by opaque foreign interests outside the EU, worsening the housing problem and intensifying the demographic threat.
