It is a fundamental question for humanity living on Earth. Are there other worlds like ours out there? In the book Hidden in the Heavens, Jason Stephan, a former scientist on NASA's Kepler mission, describes how this mission examined planets orbiting stars similar to the Sun—particularly planets similar to Earth in orbits similar to Earth's. Stephan states that what the Kepler space telescope discovered challenged centuries of theoretical and observational work and transformed our understanding of planets, planetary systems, and the stars surrounding them. Kepler discovered thousands of planets orbiting distant stars—a stunning variety of celestial bodies, including rocky planets destroyed by the intense heat of their host star; super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, with properties both similar to and different from Earth and Neptune; giant planets several times larger and heavier than Jupiter; and planets orbiting stellar systems that once only existed in science fiction. Stephan says it was a unique opportunity to work in one of the most exciting scientific fields on the most remarkable mission. It offers a unique, behind-the-scenes account of the work of the Kepler scientific team (and the sometimes chaotic interactions among team members), charting the mission's progress from the rocket launch that carried Kepler into space to the revelations of data that began to flow into the supercomputer back at NASA—evidence of strange new worlds unlike anything found in our solar system.
