This work includes 25 studies concerning maritime law from the mid-15th century until the first quarter of the 19th century, resulting from deep historical research in sources, primarily documents, most of which are unpublished and are published in separate appendices. These studies cover almost the entire subject matter of maritime law during the Ottoman period and offer an almost complete picture of the maritime law of that era.
This is not a mere collection and simple republication of studies. The presentation is methodological. The book is divided into three parts: A. Special Part: Chapter C The Nationality of the Ship, Chapter D Navigation, Chapter E Maritime Labor, Chapter F The Exploitation of the Ship, Chapter G Corporate Relations, Chapter H Maritime Law in Naxos, Chapter I General Average, Chapter J Privateering (The Course) – C. Part: Conclusions. The conclusions, together with the concise introduction in each chapter, constitute new and original elements, always based on the sources.
This work holds great value for the history of maritime law of the specific time period and can serve as a useful source for those engaged in maritime and commercial law, chiefly legal historians and those interested in history and institutions.
