The long history of terrorism in Greece was supposed to close its chapter in the summer of 2002, with the collapse of the country's key terrorist organization and one of the longest-lasting in Europe, the infamous 17 November (17N). However, instead of discouraging and weakening the armed struggle movement, the dismantling of 17N and the imprisonment of its members led to the emergence of new urban guerrilla groups, as well as an increase and intensification of revolutionary violence.
Taking into account the longevity of the terrorist experience due to 17N, George Kasimeris begins by analyzing the background of its imprisoned members. Their past, as revealed by their own words, offers us a clear picture of the political and ideological environment that laid the foundation for the creation of revolutionary terrorism in the mid-1970s.
Furthermore, this book updates the turbulent history of terrorism in Greece by analyzing the post-17N generation of urban guerrilla organizations, situating their extremism and violence within the broader political and social context.
