One would expect that in a work titled "The Comedy of Love", one would witness a love story similar to those that flood urban theater at the end of the 19th century. From the realm of vaudeville to the naturalistic stage, the loves, the infidelities, the jealousies and rivalries, the class barriers, the hypocritical behaviors and the romantic tricks compose comedies or dramas, depending on the perspective or temperament of each playwright. However, in this work by Ibsen, at least two distinct elements emerge that radically differentiate it from the romantic themes of traditional theater. One is a tendency to explore the subject and exchange views among the dramatic characters on a level that is often theoretical. In other words, the aim here is not to develop or endorse the relationship between a man and a woman in the play, but to bring to light the truth about love and marriage and, consequently, about individual independence and familial and social duty. Freedom and constraint are, therefore, essentially the two opposing protagonists of the play, and the characters play a much smaller role.
